It is a direct competitor of Bed, Bath and Beyond in the United States and Home Outfitters in Canada.
The superstore chain, which has been known for its fliers advertising "value priced" soft goods, has been undergoing an image makeover. Beginning in 2003, Linens 'n Things has enhanced its product assortment with its own brand of outdoor furniture, textiles and fabrics designed and made exclusively for Linens 'n Things. It has also beefed up the "Things" component by adding housewares, small appliances and decorative accents. Displays of "As Seen On TV" merchandise generate in-store excitement and invite shoppers to check out goods they may dimly remember glimpsing during the wee hours of sleepless nights in their Lay-Z-Boy recliners.
Historically, all merchandising and marketing decisions were made from Linens 'n' Things's Clifton, N.J. headquarters, in contrast to the highly de-centralized, local market-focused strategy used quite effectively by its direct competitor Bed Bath & Beyond. Linens 'n Things has now started to shift from its "one-size-fits-all" merchandising approach, enabling its store managers to recommend products that are more tailored to regional and local market tastes.
